LONDON — The worldwide market for handheld computing devices fell in terms of shipments in the second quarter of 2005, its sixth consecutive quarter of year-over-year decline, according to market research company IDC.
Shipments decreased 24.9 percent sequentially in the second quarter to 1.7 million units, IDC (Framingham, Mass.) said.
Despite the continued decline of the worldwide handheld device market, some manufacturers remain committed to it, the market researcher observed citing efforts by Acer and Yakumo, which have taken them into the top five shipment levels on demand for handhelds including global positioning by satellite features.
IDG said the definition of handheld device was become blurred the segment faced increased competition from mobile phones with multimedia and capabilities.
Market leader Palm once again suffered the effects of a shrinking handheld device market as its shipments declined 30.9 percent year over year. |
